Information regarding Car Seats for Star Alliance

Air Canada (AC)
Air Canada is bound by Transport Canada regulations with regards to acceptable child restraint devices (with the exception of the CARES™ child restraint device). Only approved child restraint devices can be used on board Air Canada aircraft.
All approved devices must fit between the armrests of the seat. They must be installed according to the directions on the device and secured using the seat belt fitted on the aircraft seat. For safety reasons, child restraint devices are not permitted in the Executive First Suites
Child safety seats accepted for in-flight use:
  • Models manufactured in Canada after January 1, 1981 must bear the National Safety Mark, which indicates the number of the standard(s) to which the restraint device conforms: CMVSS 213 for a child restraint device or 213.1 for an infant restraint device;
  • Models manufactured to United States standards:
    • Models manufactured between January 1, 1981 and February 25, 1985 must bear the following label:
"This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards."
    • Models manufactured on or after February 26, 1985 must bear the following two labels:

An infant for whom a seat has been purchased must be properly secured in an approved child restraint device
Weight restrictions are specified on all child restraint devices. Aft-facing devices are generally restricted to babies weighing less than 9 kg (20 lb), whereas forward-facing devices are generally restricted to babies or children weighing 9 to fewer than 30 kg (20 to 65 lb).
A combination system (i.e. both a child restraint system and a booster cushion) is accepted for in-flight use provided it is used as a child restraint system and the internal harness system is installed, and all labelling requirements are met. It must not be used in-flight as a booster cushion*, with the internal harness system removed.
A child restraint device (car seats, booster seats*) counts toward your baggage allowance when transported as checked baggage, unless the approved device is required onboard for seating the infant or child in his or her own paid seat.
A restraint device that cannot be restrained due to size, design, or damage must be transported as checked baggage as it cannot be stowed under the seats or in the overhead bins.

Air China (CA)
While they mention that an additional seat may be purchased for an infant, they do not mention use of carseats and additional information found through google is conflicting (and years out of date) anyone with recent information it would be much appreciated!

Air New Zealand (NZ)
The car seat must have its own inbuilt restraint system and be of a type approved for use in motor vehicles.
Please note: the Business Premier lie-flat seats and Premium Economy SpaceSeats are sideways facing therefore the seatbelt has an airbag in it. This means infant car seats and the CARES restraint system are not able to be used in the Premium Economy SpaceSeat on the B777-300 aircraft and Business Premier lie-flat seats on all B747 and B777 aircraft as it would impede the deployment of the airbag in the event of an emergency. Infants under the age of 2 years are still able to be seated on their parent/guardian's lap and will be provided with a specially designed infant's seat belt which will not inhibit the safety features of the airbag seat belt.

These dimensions apply to B747, B777, B767, B737 and A320 aircraft.

Child restraint systems are included in your free baggage allowance and can be taken on board in addition to hand luggage. Since the CRS must be attached to a passenger seat, a CHILD ticket must be purchased even for children under two years of age.

Other passengers must not be inconvenienced by the use of the CRS and it must not block the aisle in case of a possible emergency evacuation. The following rules must therefore be observed when boarding and allocating a seat:

As a rule a window seat is provided for a child in a CRS; the accompanying adult must sit next to the child
On wide-bodied aircraft it is also possible to book a seat in the middle row
No seats in the emergency exit rows

Note that respective charges may apply.
When traveling with an adult ticket, the baby has the right to the meal service and baggage allowance.

TAM Airlines (JJ)
There appear to be no specific car seat rules, a seat may be purchased for an infant but the infant must be held on the parents lap for takeoff and landing. On SeatGuru it further states that if you wish to bring a car seat on board for your infant to use you should contact TAM in advance for rules and regulations

TAP Portugal (TP)
Children up to 5 years of age may use their car seats on TAP flights.

Car seats must be approved by the competent authorities of a country for use on flights and in automobiles and must bear a sticker attesting to that fact (e.g. ECE R44/04, FAA, FMVSS 213 USA CMVSS 213/213 1Canada, TÜV: TÜV/958-01/2001).

The use of this type of equipment requires booking a seat and the fare for babies is the same as the fare applied to children(over 2 years old). It is required to notify TAP or your travel agent in good time (up to 24 hours before your flight) of intent to use these chairs.

Thai Airways (TG)

United Airlines (UA)
Children unable to sit upright with the seat belt fastened must be carried in an FAA-approved infant seat if not being held by an adult. United does not provide infant seats. The infant seat must be secured in an aircraft seat and cannot be held in an adult's lap. The infant seat must remain properly secured to the aircraft seat at all times. An infant seat cannot be used in an exit row or in the row immediately before or after an exit row. Passengers traveling with infants and children under 15 years of age may not be seated in exit rows. Due to oxygen mask constraints, only one lap child is allowed per seat section and, on some aircraft, passengers with lap infants may not be seated in certain rows.

You may use an approved infant car seat on board the aircraft when you purchase a seat for your child. The seat must be an FAA-approved child safety seat device. Please note the following infant car seat placement restrictions: on one-aisle aircraft, car seats must be placed in window seats, on two-aisle aircraft, car seats must be placed in window seats or the middle seat of a center section. Car seats are not permitted in rear-facing seats on any aircraft.
